Frequently Asked

MLT FAQs

Common questions about the MLT programme. For admission, fees, and process questions, see /admission/.

What does an MLT actually do day-to-day?
You collect samples (blood, urine, body fluids, tissue), prepare them for testing, run diagnostic tests on lab equipment, analyse results, and document findings. Many MLTs also handle quality control, equipment calibration, and patient interaction. The role is technical, detail-oriented, and central to medical decision-making.
Can MLT graduates work outside hospitals?
Yes. Many of our alumni work at standalone diagnostic chains (Pathkind, Lal Path Lab, Apollo Diagnostics), specialised pathology labs, research institutions, blood banks, and private clinics. Some have started their own collection centres and pathology labs.
Is MLT recognised by government for jobs?
MLT at VIMS is a UGC-recognised Bachelor's degree, recognised at par with any Bachelor's degree for all government recruitment categories — UPSC, SSC, State PSC, Indian Railways, ESIC, CGHS, and central health services. It is recognised at par with any Bachelor's degree for these purposes.
What qualification will I receive?
VIMS awards a UGC-recognised three-year Bachelor's degree. A Masters Degree route is available after that. They're all under the broader umbrella of "MLT" as a profession.
Can I do MLT after 12th Arts or Commerce?
No. MLT requires 12th Science background — Physics, Chemistry, Biology — because the curriculum is heavily lab-science-based. If you're from Arts or Commerce, speak with our counsellor about Hospital Management or other paramedical routes.
Is this the same as DMLT or BMLT?
Those are the names most people search for. At VIMS the two-year route is a diploma and the three-year route is a full degree, both conferred by a UGC-recognised university. Which one suits you depends on your 12th subjects — the counsellor will confirm on the call.
Is this a DMLT or a B.Sc medical lab technician course?
The medical lab technician course is offered at both diploma and degree level, conferred by a UGC-recognised university. It covers pathology, biochemistry and clinical laboratory work, with a supervised hospital internship.
What are the lab technician course fees in Patna?
The B.Sc Medical Lab Technician programme fee at VIMS is Rs 2,21,000 for the full-time Attending track and Rs 1,66,000 for the Non-Attending track, for the complete programme. The 2-year DMLT Diploma is Rs 1,06,000 (Attending) / Rs 84,000 (Non-Attending). A one-time Admission Form fee of Rs 2,000 and Registration fee of Rs 5,000 also apply, and fees can be paid semester by semester or in installments on written request. Call 1800-419-8443 for the exact fee slip.
Is NEET required for a medical lab technician course?
No. NEET is not required for the MLT course at VIMS. Admission is direct after 12th Science (PCB) with no entrance exam — apply, complete the formalities, and secure your seat directly at our Patna campus.
What is the salary of a medical lab technician in India?
Freshers typically earn about Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, rising to roughly Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 with a few years of laboratory experience, and higher in senior or supervisory roles. Pay depends on the hospital or diagnostic lab, the city and your skill level.
Is medical lab technician a good career choice?
Yes. Every hospital, diagnostic lab and health check-up centre needs trained lab technicians, and India faces a large shortage of allied-health professionals, so demand is steady and growing. It is a hands-on clinical role with a clear growth path, and VIMS provides placement support with hospital and diagnostic-lab partners after you graduate.
