What a OTT graduate actually does

As an OT Technologist, you prepare the operation theatre before every surgery, sterilise and arrange surgical instruments, assist anaesthetists during procedures, monitor patient vitals, and ensure the OT environment meets surgical safety standards. You work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses — and you're critical to surgical success. No surgery happens without OT Technologists on the team.

What does an OT Technologist actually do?

Before surgery: prepare the OT, sterilise instruments, set up surgical trays. During surgery: assist surgeons by passing instruments, monitor patient vitals, support the anaesthetist. After surgery: clean and re-sterilise the OT, document equipment use, ensure safety standards. The role is high-stakes, hands-on, and central to surgical success.

Is OTT physically demanding?

Yes — OT work involves long standing periods (some surgeries last 4-6 hours), wearing protective gear, and being attentive throughout. It's suitable for students who can handle physical stamina and high-pressure environments. Most graduates adapt within months.

Can women work in operation theatres?

Absolutely. Many of VIMS's OTT alumni are women working at major hospitals across Bihar. There is no gender restriction for OT roles, and several specialised OTs (gynaecology, paediatric) actively prefer female technologists.

How is OTT different from nursing?

Nursing is broader — it covers ward care, medication administration, and patient management. OTT is specialised for the operation theatre — surgical instrumentation, anaesthesia support, OT-specific protocols. They work together but have distinct roles. OT Technologists typically earn comparable to or more than ward nurses with equivalent experience.

Can I become a surgeon after OTT?

No. To become a surgeon, you need MBBS + MS specialisation. OTT prepares you to work *with* surgeons as a critical member of the surgical team, not to perform surgery yourself. If your goal is to be a surgeon, you need to pursue MBBS through NEET.
