What a RIT graduate actually does

As a Radio Imaging Technologist, you operate X-ray machines, CT scanners, MRI systems, and ultrasound equipment to capture diagnostic images. You position patients correctly, adjust machine parameters for the best image, ensure radiation safety, and prepare images for radiologist interpretation. Your images directly enable doctors to diagnose fractures, tumours, organ conditions, and pregnancies. RIT Technologists are the eyes of modern medicine.

Beyond your first job, here are the directions RIT graduates can grow into.

CT/MRI Specialist Technologist Specialise in advanced modalities — significantly higher pay
Radiology Department In-charge Manage imaging operations at hospitals or chains
Government roles X-ray Technician, AIIMS/IGIMS recruitments, Indian Railways medical units
M.Voc Radiology & Imaging Postgraduate route for senior technical and academic roles
Imaging centre ownership Establish your own diagnostic centre — Shivam Detal Clinic (Arah) is a VIMS alumni example
Why Choose RIT

Why RIT at VIMS makes sense

Imaging is the highest-paid paramedical track

CT/MRI specialists routinely earn ₹50,000-₹90,000+ as senior technologists. Demand far exceeds supply in Bihar.

Technology-forward career

You work with the most advanced equipment in healthcare — CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound. Future-proof skill set.

Less physical, more cognitive

Compared to nursing or OTT, radiology is more cognitive than physical. Suits those who prefer technical precision over high-stress environments.

Modern imaging lab at VIMS

Train on real X-ray and ultrasound equipment. Internship places you in active radiology departments.

Frequently Asked

RIT FAQs

Common questions about the RIT programme. For admission, fees, and process questions, see /admission/.

What does a Radiology Technologist do?
You operate medical imaging equipment — X-ray machines, CT scanners, MRI systems, ultrasound units. Day-to-day: position patients correctly, adjust machine parameters for diagnostic clarity, ensure radiation safety, prepare images for doctor review, maintain imaging records. The role is technical, precise, and central to diagnosis.
Is radiation safe? Won't I get exposed?
Modern radiology has stringent safety protocols — lead aprons, shielded rooms, radiation badges that monitor cumulative exposure, regulated working hours. Properly trained technologists working in proper facilities have no measurable health impact from occupational exposure. RIT training at VIMS includes substantial focus on radiation safety.
Do I need to learn coding or computers?
Modern radiology uses PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) and DICOM standards — basic computer literacy is essential, but you don't need to "code." If you can use a smartphone confidently, you'll learn the imaging software within weeks of training.
Can RIT graduates work in government hospitals?
Yes. Sadar Hospitals, AIIMS, IGIMS, ESIC hospitals, Indian Railways health units, and Bihar government health centres all recruit qualified RIT technologists. B.Voc RIT meets the eligibility criteria for X-ray Technician and Radiology Technician posts in central and state recruitment.
How is RIT different from being a Radiologist?
A Radiologist is an MD doctor (MBBS + MD Radiology) who interprets images and diagnoses. A Radiology Technologist (RIT graduate) operates the equipment and acquires the images. They work together — RIT acquires, Radiologist interprets. RIT is a 3-year career path; Radiologist requires 8-10 years of medical education.
